The hotel weekend

Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning were spent getting some much needed relaxation at the Bellevue Embassy Suites. For those that are unaware, this is my very favorite hotel chain in the entire world. You get:

complimentary buffet breakfast

a pool

spa

elegant bedroom quarters

free HBO

and the "Manager's Special" (an open bar every day from 5:30-7:30, where they serve you all the Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers you want)

My free stay came from my mom as a birthday present, and though the B Day was way back in June, I didn't spend it until after Jana recently returned from China, so we could go to the Embassy together. I had a blast, especially during room service. They offer these NY Pepper steaks with a honey mustard glaze that just felt like a party in my mouth. And those garlic mashed potatoes!

Though I'm sad to be leaving the air-conditioned glory of the hotel, I am pleased to be back home with my computer games and TV shows. My stay gave me some breathing room to re-engage the outside world.

Next week, I'll be having many discussions.

So I consulted the troubleshooting section of Xbox.com to resolve my problem with connecting to Xbox Live. The Xbox Dashboard says the issue is that it cannot detect cables going from the box to my modem.

So I switched out the System Link cable my brother has and hauled out my 90 ft ethernet cable to try that, but no such luck. Still no connection, even after shutting down the PC, unhooking it from the modem, and turning things on/off again. And I know it's not an issue with Comcast, because it's working fine right now.

I could call the tech support guys and wait in line over the phone for the next representative, but I already know they're going to say the same things on the site. It looks like J.P. is screwed as far as ever connecting to Xbox Live again.

*UPDATE: I did call tech support. The man's wise advice: "Buy another RJ-45 cable." Considering that I already tried the Xbox System Link cable (which is crossover, but worked anyway before) and my own genuine Ethernet cable that I know isn't broken, this recommendation is about as useful as an ice salesman is to an Eskimo.

The trailer didn't show any of the plot but I assumed it would be one of those generic romantic comedies where the protagonist lies and tricks people but then to his surprise he meets someone who he really falls in love with, and there are montages and flirting and laughing and they become close but it's all based on a lie so then suddenly she finds out the truth and he has to admit that he's a scumbag but then he publicly humiliates himself and proves to her that he really loves her and then... oh shit, what if in this one they got MARRIED AT THE END? Would that be ironic or what? The hunter becomes the huntress, or whatever.

But there was some good buzz on this one...I do like Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn sometimes and the movie was free and I quit drinking a long time ago so what the hell, man, I went.

Turns out what this is is one of those generic romantic comedies where the protagonist lies and tricks people but then to his surprise he meets someone who he really falls in love with, and there are montages and flirting and laughing and they become close but it's all based on a lie so then suddenly she finds out the truth and he has to admit that he's a scumbag but then he publicly humiliates himself and proves to her that he really loves her and whatever else I said earlier.

Last night CBS came in somewhat static-free, so I caught the premiere of "Big Brother 6," which really should just be renamed "Corporate view of diversity."

The concept of the show is Survivor-esque, but instead you have 14 or so contestants locked up in a house in LA, where they have to live for an extended period of time, scheming, plotting and voting each other out. CBS always attempts to provide a "spectrum" of America, or perhaps humanity as a whole, and it's a little silly to see what they ultimately come up with.

Of course everyone is good-looking, ala the Real World: tits, ass, washboard abs, square jaws, muscles. Diversity is apparently a checklist rather than a conscious thought: athletic chick, bombshell chick, gay guy, evil guy, black guy, someone mature ("mature" being someone out of their 20's but not out of their 40's), and oh yeah, they threw in a Muslim to be topical and controversial.

The house itself is really the star, because apparently there's secret passageways and shit that we have yet to see. Lowpoints are hearing the contestants themselves actually talk, like in their introductions"

Firefighter: "I'm ____ and I'm a firefighter, and when I get in there, I'm gonna heat things up!"

Nurse: "I"m ____ and I'm an ER nurse, and everyone's going to need medical attention when I'm through with them!"

........

Oh yeah, it's a winner.

Swirling Bat sequel rumors

So every fanboy kinda rallied around Crispin Glover being the next Joker.

I'll admit, I jumped on the bandwagon when I read it. My Crispin experience has been limited but you only really need to see his brand of crazy in the rat movie remake "Willard" to know he could pull it off.

But then, Christian "Swear to ME!" Bale, the new Batman himself, was apparently at some party acting a little drunk and let slip an inside detail. Chris Nolan, the "Batman Begins" director is trying to court a big name Hollywood actor for the role, who is in fact a good friend of the original Joker, Jack Nicholson.

That person is Sean Penn.

I'd be a little intrigued because getting Penn would mean showing us a Joker we've never seen before in movies or TV. He could play a less over the top sadistic maniac. Instead of a wacky Joker who entertains the audience with sick humor, you could present a character who is just sick. Ultimately, the Joker kills because he thinks it's funny. He's the only one in on the joke.

In any case, I definitely think Brittany Murphy should play Harley Quinn.

Highlights were gazing at the countryside and finally getting to enjoy the outdoors (fire, fresh air, space) after a long while.

Still, I was in a somber funk most of the time. It had to do with what I was thinking about. But it was also my continuous coughing, and missing Jana. I just didn't feel in the mood to buy more beer, smoke anybody's weed, go swimming or do much hiking. Feeling shitty and missing my girl made me long for home, which is probably why I agreed to pack up early and head back with Ryan.

I suppose I'll head to Alvin's tonight and go watch the fireworks. Though, honestly, I'm getting more purpose and fulfillment out of cleaning my room in preparation for Miss Kelly's return.
